Icarus: An Arboretum Addition

Under the guidance of Professor Leon Maynard, I was tasked with designing a new building for the University of Kentucky Arboretum. Drawing inspiration from a series of conceptualization exercises, including collages and mood boards that helped shape a narrative, I envisioned a linear progression of gardens that told a reimagined version of the Icarus myth. The journey begins at ground level and gradually ascends, symbolizing the climb toward the sun, embodying themes of ambition, growth, and the pursuit of the extraordinary.

Icarus: An Arboretum Addition

Following the conceptualization phase, I was tasked with designing an environmentally conscious structure that seamlessly integrated essential business functions, three gardens, ample storage, and an art gallery. The final design envisioned a three-story building that leveraged the existing landscape for natural heat conservation, while its cubic form allowed for rooftop gardening, further enhancing sustainability and the connection to nature.
